Free Native Trees

A Spring Tradition

For the past 8 years Merikay Smith has led a project to get more native trees/shrubs planted in our watershed. It’s her favorite activity with SCWP and MBA each spring. She orders trees from the Maryland DNR in the fall then sometime in March/April she gets an email saying the trees are ready! She usually only has just a few days’ notice to get the word out and distribute the trees. Because they’re bare root they must be kept moist and have the best survival rate if picked up and planted the same day. About 3,000 trees have been shared in this project. This year’s event will be March 25 - 26. Details are available in our “Event” post.

Photo shows some of the free trees after a few years’ growth.
